Lone Worker Safety

The one use of location data that workers frequently want. What makes a safety system a safety system rather than a tracker with a safety label.

Lone worker protection is the strongest case for location data in this field, and the one most often undermined by building it on a tracking product.

What a safety system needs

A way to raise an alarm — a button, a pull cord, a voice command — that works with one hand and without unlocking a phone.

Position available when an alarm is raised.

A check-in schedule, so a missed check-in triggers a response.

Fall or man-down detection, where the risk warrants it.

A response plan: who is called, in what order, and what they do. This is the part most often missing, and without it the alarm rings into nothing.

What it does not need

A continuous stored record of where the person has been.

Position visible to a manager during ordinary work.

Route history.

The difference between safety and surveillance here is when the position is read, not whether it is available.

The design that keeps it a safety system

Position on demand, not on schedule. The system can locate the person when an alarm fires or a check-in is missed; it does not log a trail in between.

Access on alarm only, with the access logged and reviewable.

The worker can see what the system knows about them and when it was read.

A pause for breaks and personal time, which for a lone worker system means the check-in schedule pauses rather than the alarm capability.

Products that offer this exist. Asking for it is the difference between a safety deployment and a tracking deployment with a safety justification attached.

Why workers accept it

Because it is for them, and they can tell.

Especially in roles where the risk is real: care visits to unfamiliar homes, remote maintenance, night work, lone retail.

And because the alarm is theirs to raise, which puts the control in the right hands.

The acceptance disappears the moment the same data is used for anything else, which is the thing to protect rather than exploit.

The failure that matters

An alarm with no response is worse than no alarm, because the worker believes they are covered.

Test the response path, including out of hours and at weekends.

Measure the time from alarm to human contact.

Review every alarm, including false ones, because a high false-alarm rate means people will stop trusting it and eventually stop using it.

Where it goes wrong

Safety used as the justification, tracking as the deployment. A system logging continuous position, sold internally on lone worker grounds, is not a safety system.

Check what it actually collects rather than what it is called, because the workforce will.

Test the response path

An alarm with no response is worse than no alarm.

Raise a test alarm out of hours, deliberately, and time what happens.

Check the on-call person can actually log in and locate the device.

Check the escalation to authorities is understood by whoever would do it.

Repeat annually, and after any change of provider or personnel, because this is the control that fails silently and is discovered at the worst moment.
