Cameras in Vehicles
Forward-facing and driver-facing cameras are different propositions with different justifications, and products bundle them.
Telematics vendors increasingly sell cameras alongside location. The two directions a camera can point are not the same decision.
Forward-facing
Records the road ahead.
The case is strong: disputed collisions, false claims, insurance premiums, and evidence that protects the driver at least as often as it implicates them.
Most drivers accept it, and many want it, because the alternative is their word against a claimant's.
Event-triggered is better than continuous: record on harsh braking, impact or manual trigger, with a short buffer before and after.
It captures other road users, which carries its own obligations — signage on the vehicle, a retention period measured in days, and a route for a member of the public to make a request.
Driver-facing
Records the person, continuously or on trigger.
A different proposition entirely, and the one that produces resignations.
The safety case is fatigue and distraction detection, which is real in long-haul driving and thin in most other operations.
The intrusion is substantial: a camera pointed at a person's face for their entire working day, including when they are alone, eating, or upset.
Regulators have examined these closely and proportionality is a much harder test to pass than for forward-facing.
The questions for driver-facing specifically
What is the actual risk being addressed, with evidence from your own operation?
Would forward-facing plus telematics address it? For most fleets, yes.
Is it event-triggered or continuous? Continuous recording of a person's face for an entire shift is very hard to justify.
Is there a cover or a shutter for breaks and personal time?
Who reviews the footage, when, and is the review logged?
Is audio recorded? Audio raises the intrusion sharply and is rarely necessary.
The bundling problem
Cameras arrive as a module on a telematics contract, sometimes at no extra cost, which is how they get deployed without a decision.
A free feature is still a processing operation requiring its own basis, assessment and notice.
Decide on each direction separately and record the decision, including the decision not to enable something.
If cameras are deployed
Signage on the vehicle, for the public as well as the driver.
Short retention, days rather than months, with a hold for incidents.
Event-triggered rather than continuous, wherever the technology allows.
Access on incident only, logged.
The driver can see footage of themselves, and is told when it is reviewed.
And no live viewing, which is the feature that turns a safety system into observation and which some products offer by default.
Decide each direction separately
And record both decisions, including the negative one.
Forward-facing and driver-facing are different processing operations with different justifications and different acceptance.
A camera module bundled into a telematics contract is not a decision; it is a default.
Write down: forward-facing enabled, on event trigger, retention seven days. Driver-facing not enabled, considered, rejected because forward-facing addresses the collision case.
That paragraph is what an assessment needs and what a workforce wants to hear.
